Dem Blog Dovegreyreader verdanke ich den Hinweis auf das Interview mit der britischen Schriftstellerin Iris Murdoch (1919 – 1999), das in der Paris Review erschien.
Das folgende Zitat findet sich gegen Ende des Interviews:
INTERVIEWER: What effect would you like your books to have?
MURDOCH: I’d like people to enjoy reading them. A readable novel is a gift to humanity. It provides an innocent occupation. Any novel takes people away from their troubles and the television set; it may even stir them to reflect about human life, characters, morals. So I would like people to be able to read the stuff. I’d like it to be understood too; though some of the novels are not all that easy, I’d like them to be understood, and not grossly misunderstood. But literature is to be enjoyed, to be grasped by enjoyment.
INTERVIEWER: How would you describe your ideal reader?
MURDOCH: Those who like a jolly good yarn are welcome and worthy readers. I suppose the ideal reader is someone who likes a jolly good yarn and enjoys thinking about the book as well, thinking about the moral issues.

Ach ja, es gibt vermutlich tausende gute engl.sprachige Blogs 🙂 und „The Sea“ von Murdoch war auch klasse. By the way, bei mir hat sich eine engl.sprachige Bloggerin gemeldet, die Interesse an einem Post (in Englisch) über deutschsprachige Literatur hätte. Ich bin – schon aus Zeitgründen – nicht so ganz brennend motiviert. Daraufhin regte sie an, ich könne mich ja mal unter anderen Bloggern umhören. Also, falls du Interesse hast, nenne ich dir gern mal zum Reinschnuppern den Blog.
